Nestled among the agency's 200-point mission goals is a proposal to mine the moon for fuel used in fusion reactors -- futuristic power plants that have been demonstrated in proof-of-concept but are likely decades away from commercial deployment. Helium-3 is considered a safe, environmentally friendly fuel candidate for these generators, and while it is scarce on Earth it is plentiful on the moon. As a result, scientists have begun to consider the practicality of mining lunar Helium-3 as a replacement for fossil fuels. "After four-and-half-billion years, there should be large amounts of helium-3 on the moon," said Gerald Kulcinski, a professor who leads the Fusion Technology Institute at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Last year NASA administrator Mike Griffin named Kulcinski to lead a number of committees reporting to NASA's influential NASA Advisory Council, its preeminent civilian leadership arm. The Council is chaired by Apollo 17 astronaut Harrison Hagan "Jack" Schmitt, a leading proponent of mining the moon for helium 3. Schmitt, who holds the distance record for driving a NASA rover on the moon (22 miles through the Taurus-Littrow valley), is also a former U.S. senator (R-New Mexico). The Council was restructured last year with a new mission: implementing President Bush's "Vision for Space Exploration," which targets Mars as its ultimate destination. Other prominent members of the Council include ex-astronaut Neil Armstrong. Schmitt and Kulcinski are longtime friends and academic partners, and are known as helium-3 fusion's biggest promoters. At the Fusion Technology Institute, Kulcinski's team has produced small-scale helium-3 fusion reactions in the basketball-sized fusion device. The reactor produced one milliwatt of power on a continuous basis. While still theoretical, nuclear fusion is touted as a safer, more sustainable way to generate nuclear energy: Fusion plants produce much less radioactive waste, especially if powered by helium-3. But experts say commercial-sized fusion reactors are at least 50 years away. The isotope is extremely rare on Earth but abundant on the moon. Some experts estimate there a millions of tons in lunar soil -- and that a single Space-Shuttle load would power the entire United States for a year. NASA plans to have a permanent moon base by 2024, but America is not the only nation with plans for a moon base. China, India, the European Space Agency, and at least one Russian corporation, Energia, have visions of building manned lunar bases post-2020. Mining the moon for helium-3 has been discussed widely in space circles and international space conferences. Both China and Russia have stated their nations' interest in helium-3. "We will provide the most reliable report on helium-3 to mankind," Ouyang Ziyuan, the chief scientist of China's lunar program, told a Chinese newspaper. "Whoever first conquers the moon will benef

RADIATION

Is all radiation harmful?

No. There are two types of radiation: non-ionizing and ionizing. Non-ionizing radiation includes infrared radiation, radio waves, cellphone radiation and the radiation we use to cook food in a microwave. Such radiation does not break chemical bonds. If it is very intense, it can heat up tissues; otherwise, it does not have significant effects. It is not believed to cause cancer. Ionizing radiation is much more dangerous because it does break chemical bonds and thus does cause cancer. Examples of this kind of radiation include X-rays, gamma rays and the alpha or beta particles emitted by radioactive elements as they decay.

What happens when someone is exposed to ionizing radiation?

That depends on how long you are exposed. The initial symptoms are identical to those suffered by a person undergoing radiation therapy for cancer. The first signs include nausea and fatigue, then vomiting. After that comes hair loss and diarrhea. For radiotherapy for tumors, the exposure generally stops after that point and the symptoms are controlled. But with heavier exposure, the next stage is generally destruction of the intestinal lining and worse diarrhea and dehydration, then central nervous system damage. After that comes loss of consciousness and, inevitably, death.

How does radiation released from nuclear plants compare with a nuclear bomb?

A nuclear explosion produces two types of radiation that has lethal effects. The blast itself produces X-rays and gamma rays that irradiate anyone near the site, usually with a lethal or near-lethal dose of radiation. Most of the 166,000 Japanese who died at Hiroshima in the first four months after the atomic bombing suffered from this type of radiation, which killed them directly or aggravated other injuries suffered in the blast. It also produces clouds of radioactive ash that includes cesium-137, iodine-131, radioactive strontium and a host of other long-lived byproducts of the explosion — known collectively as fallout. This material can collect on skin and clothing, where it can emit radiation that pierces the skin. More important, it can accumulate in food, milk, water and other products that are ingested. It is not clear how many Hiroshima residents died of cancer from this source, but some estimates put it at more than 100,000. Fukushima is not emitting gamma or X-irradiation. Most of the radioactivity is in the form of radiocesium and radioiodine, which are byproducts of the fission of uranium in the fuel rods. What makes cesium-137 and iodine-131 dangerous? Iodine-131 is absorbed preferentially in the thyroid gland, where it can cause tumors. It has a half-life of eight days and is most dangerous to children because it damages rapidly dividing cells. The problem can be substantially ameliorated by taking tablets of ordinary iodine, which bind to the thyroid and prevent the radioactive iodine from binding. Cesium-137, which has a half-life of 30 years, is more serious. It is a salt that acts like potassium and goes everywhere in the body. It is absorbed into soft tissues, causing sarcomas. It contaminates food, water and milk and gets into the body when those things are ingested. Contamination with cesium-137 is one of the main reasons large areas of land had to be abandoned in the wake of the Chernobyl disaster in 1986.

How much exposure is enough to make someone sick?

The biological risk of exposure to radiation is measured in sieverts, or Sv. An exposure of 500,000 microsieverts, or µSv, can lead to nausea and fatigue within hours. A dose of 750,000 µSv causes hair loss within two or three weeks, and a dose of 1 million µSv will cause hemorrhage. Death usually occurs at a dose of 4 million µSv. In terms of long-term effects, experts estimate that if 10,000 people were each exposed to 10,000 µSv of ionizing radiation in small doses over a lifetime, about five or six more people in the group would die of cancer than would be expected without the radiation exposure. What were the health consequences of Chernobyl and Three Mile Island? In the case of Chernobyl, United Nations reports have estimated that fewer than 50 people had died of causes directly related to radiation exposure. Most were rescue workers who had received high radiation doses; 28 died within the first few months. As many as 4,000 people are expected to eventually die of radiation-related causes. A 2005 report said about 4,000 thyroid cancers were directly related to radiation exposure, mostly in people who were children or adolescents at the time of the disaster and drank milk highly contaminated with radioactive iodine. At least nine died. To track the health fallout of the 1979 Three Mile Island disaster, the Pennsylvania Department of Health kept a registry of more than 30,000 people who lived within five miles of the site at the time. Finding little evidence of significantly changed cancer rates, it discontinued the database in 1997.

So how much radiation have people in Japan been exposed to? How risky is it?

The levels of exposure are unclear. Radiation levels were reported to have jumped to about 400,000 µSv per hour inside the Fukushima plant after an explosion Tuesday, although the levels subsided rapidly. Sustained exposure to this level of radiation would be extremely hazardous. Levels outside the plant would have been substantially lower. Civilians who have been exposed to radiation have been treated by simply getting their clothes washed and being given showers because the exposure has been so minimal. Workers in the plant will receive the highest exposure, but they are outfitted with full protective gear, wear radiation badges and work for shifts of only an hour or two at a time. According to news reports, radiation levels in Tokyo have been 10 times normal, which is still very low

subjective

National Space Agency (ANGKASA) is proudly present to you a brand New program coming New Year 2011. This program is known as “Ideas for Try Zero G in Space”. The program is actually the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) educational program in the International Space Station (ISS). The purpose of this program is to show the difference of science phenomenon between 0G (in ISS) and 1G (on Earth) for educational purpose. Astronaut who stay in ISS will demonstrate the educational activity according to the experimental procedure proposed by teachers or students and it will be recorded by the High Definition video camera. The coming next Ideas for Try Zero G in Space experiments will be attempted by astronaut Furukawa during his long stay mission in Japanese experiment module, KIBO on the ISS around March 2011. Therefore ANGKASA & JAXA are working together to look for ideas from you!

How? Well, it’s easy, all you have to do is to come up with an idea (or perhaps more ideas) of the basic science experiment with some simple and easy understand explanation on its procedure as well as the expected outcome. The experiment must be simple, easy to understand by children and easy to be carried out by Japanese Astronaut Furukawa during his next long stay mission in Japanese experiment module, Kibo on the ISS. Then send us you ideas by filling up the application form (attach together with this email) and send it (via postal mail, email, fax or website) to ANGKASA by 25 January 2011 (Tuesday) before 5pm. I know time is too short but why not give it a try, who knows your ideas maybe selected for next year “Ideas for Try Zero G in Space”.

More details about this program can be found in “Ideas for Try Zero G in Space.pdf”. Please be informed that we are currently working on updating our website for the details information of this program with some useful links to the experimental videos recorded previously by JAXA. So stay tune and check up our website frequently for the next two or three to get more inspiration to create your own unique and novel ideas.

Please do not hesitate to contact me (lau@angkasa.gov.my) or my colleagues Mr. Jong Tze Kian (ltkjong@angkasa.gov.my) or Ms Nur’ Fazilah (fazilah@angkasa.gov.my) if you have any queries.

Thank you for your attention.

Best regards

Lau Chen Chen

Research Officer
National Space Agency (ANGKASA)
National Planetarium
Lot 53, Jalan Perdana
50480 Kuala Lumpur

Tel : 03 – 2273 4303/ 5484 Fax : 03 – 2273 5488

Website : www.angkasa.gov.my/planetarium

physics

LASER

Today, lasers can be found almost everywhere, from telephone lines to cutting edge scientific research, supermarket scanners, and even cat toys. The first laser light was produced on May 16, 1960 at the Hughes Research Lab in Malibu, California when Theodore Maiman switched on his fist-sized device that flashed a bright red spot onto a photo-detector. Since then, lasers have become smaller, more powerful, and ubiquitous in modern technology.

Lasers have had an especially big impact on information technology. Sending data using digitized laser light signals over fiber optics has revolutionized the transfer of data. The IBM Roadrunner, the world's second fastest supercomputer, has over 45,000 lasers used for sending data across its 133,000 processing cores. Likewise, fiber optics make up the backbone of the Internet as nearly all data runs on fiber optic lines.

physics

The Sun

Fact about The sun

1. The age of the Sun is about 4.5 billion years. The location of Sun in Our solar system is on the edge of a spiral arm called Orion's Arm, and is one-half to two-thirds of the way (28,000 light-years) from the center of our Milky Way galaxy. The Sun, an ordinary star, contains more than 99.8% of the total mass of our solar system. The amount of the Sun's energy reaching the Earth's atmosphere (known as the Solar constant) is equivalent to 1.37 kw of electricity per square metre

The energy in the sunlight we see today started out in the core of the Sun 30,000 years ago - it spent most of this time passing through the dense atoms that make the sun and just 8 minutes to reach us once it had left the Sun

The Sun is our closest star and the centre of the Solar System. It is around four and a half thousand million years old and in 6 thousand million years or so, it is predicted that it will reach the end of its life (more on that further down). Currently however, it is an 'average' sized star, classified as a G2 type main sequence star. These can be found quite abundantly throughout the visible universe.

However, don't let this apparent 'normalness' of the Sun's size in comparison with other stars fool you - compared with anything else in our solar system, it is absolutely superlative. To give you an idea of its size, it has 333,400 times more mass than the Earth and contains 99.86% of the mass of the entire Solar System - this means Jupiter and all the other planets and asteroids put together only account for 0.14% of the mass of the Solar System. The Sun's core is so hot and dense that just a pinhead of its material could kill a person 160 kilometres away.

Every second the Sun loses 4.5 million tonnes of material, blown off to space - this means that in 42 million years it would lose enough material to make the Earth. However this high loss rate of mass is really rather insignificant when compared to the total mass of the Sun - over the past 4,500 million years it has barely lost a few hundredths of a percent of its total mass. Interestingly, all the light we see from the Sun comes from a layer 500km deep (the top 0.1%) and takes about 8.3 minutes to reach us down here on Earth. By contrast, radiation from its core takes about 170,000 years to make its way out to the surface, due to the high density of the mass it must travel through.

Viewed from the surface of the Earth, to normal human beings the Sun appears to be a simple, round uniform yellow ball. When observed in detail however, as the pictures show, this is far from being the case. In reality it has several well-defined layers leading up its surface, and above its surface it even has what could be termed it's atmosphere - the mystifyingly scorching hot solar corona.

An imaginary solar 'tourist', travelling out from the centre of the Sun, would begin his journey at a sweltering 15.6million°K in the core, gradually decreasing as he got further from the centre, eventually reaching just 5780 or so Kelvins in the photosphere - the Sun's 'surface'. However, the temperature would then begin to increase as he progresses through the Chromosphere, up to 10,000K, culminating in an a massive 1 million K (or higher) in the corona! The exact reason for this unexpectedly high temperature in the corona is still unknown, though recent research has ascertained that the energy needed to heat the corona to such high temperatures is somehow provided by the Sun's vast magnetic field.

The Sun was born, as mentioned earlier, about 4.5 thousand million years ago. Like all stars, it was formed when a cloud of gas of at least 100 Solar Masses, floating around the galaxy, got squeezed by an outside influence (e.g. a nearby supernova explosion or the pressure of a passing spiral arm of the galaxy) and started to collapse. After a while, the cloud (or 'nebula') would have reached a point at which it continued collapsing under its own weight, breaking up in the process to form many different stars. As the part that was to be the Sun collapsed further, it became more and more dense and increased in temperature. Under the increasingly strong influence of a central gravitational force, the mass would soon have formed a spherical shape, and when the temperature in the centre reached about 15 million°C, it got hot enough for nuclear reactions to start. The outward force created by these reactions acted as a stabilizing influence on the star, preventing further collapse, so the star eventually reached an equilibrium.

Nuclear Fusion

The Sun is now a stable star, though gradually increasing in luminosity. It is presently 'burning' hydrogen in its core, converting it into Helium by a nuclear fusion process. And here's where the extremely high temperature and pressure present in the core of the Sun comes in, for these conditions make it impossible for whole atoms to exist - instead the protons and electrons forming atoms are free to move sperately, thereby forming a plasma in the Solar core. The immense pressure of the Sun's weight then acts to push the protons and electrons closer together than they would be normally, and eventually to fuse together 4 Hydrogen nuclei (ie 4 protons), in a number of stages,

to end up with 1 helium nucleus (ie 2 protons and 2 neutrons).

However, the Helium nucleus formed actually contains very slightly less mass than
the 4 protons which formed it. This is because the rest of the mass is converted into pure energy in the ratio E=mc². This simple reaction, occurring on a vast scale inside the Sun's core, produces absolutely vast amounts of energy, and is the source of all electromagnetic radiation (and heat) coming from the Sun.
In fact about 700 million tons of Hydrogen are converted to Helium every second, releasing 5 million tons of pure energy.

The Sun's Future

However nuclear fusion can only keep happening for another four thousand million years or so, when Hydrogen will then run out in the core. When this happens the inner core will shrink and the Sun will expand and get hotter, due to Hydrogen being 'burned' in the outer core, engulfing Mercury and nearly reaching Venus. As it does so, the core will reach a blistering 100 million°C and will begin to burn the Helium there. This will keep the star stable as a 'Red Giant' for a thousand million years or so until the Helium runs out. When this happens, the core will begin collapsing again and it'll get hotter and the star will get bigger once more, expanding to the present orbit of Earth.

At this point, the Sun will be very unstable, expanding and shrinking often and losing a lot of material into space. Soon afterwards, all that will be left will be its inner Carbon core, which, although it will still contain about 2 thirds of the Sun's mass, will be collapsed so much that it will have reached the ultimate density, quantum forces will stop it collapsing further and it'll become a 'White Dwarf' - a small star about the size of the Earth but much denser (about 1cm3 of this stuff would have the mass of a tonne - that's a million times the density of water!)

Majlis Anugerah Cemerlang

<img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; Both are sparks of electricity created through the attraction of unlike charges. The difference is that static electricity creates a small spark, while lightning is a huge spark of electricity.

In storm clouds, tiny particles in the cloud move around picking up positive or negative energy charges, like when shoes scuff a rug. The positive charged particles stay light, and rise to the top of the cloud. The negative charged particles get heavier, and collect at the bottom of the cloud.
As more particles become charged, they divide into opposing groups in the cloud. When the power of attraction between them gets too great, the particles discharge their energy at each other, completing a path for electricity to travel through the air. We call this flow of electricity lightning.

It's the negative charges in the bottom of the cloud that cause lightning to strike the ground. When the negatively charged particles group together, they begin to seek out positive charges from the ground below. The excess electrons create a channel of charged air called a leader that reaches down to the ground below. The leaders attract other charged ground-based channels called streamers.

When the stepped leader from the cloud meets a returning streamer from the ground, the path is ready. An electrical current called the return stroke, travels back up the path. This return stroke releases tremendous energy, bright light and thunder.

The typical stroke can last only 30 milliseconds, so four to five strokes may happen in the blink of an eye. Despite the old saying, lightning does strike the same place twice.

To review, lightning is created by the attraction between opposite charges, the same force that creates static electricity. But lightning uses huge opposite charges to produce an electrical current that's nothing like what you'd get from static electricity.

Stars

On a clear dark night, a few thousand stars are visible to the naked eye. Even though each individual star is unique, all stars share much in common. The Sun, which is the source of virtually all light, heat and energy reaching the Earth, is the nearest star. Today, we know that stars are born from interstellar gas clouds, shine by nuclear fusion and then die, sometimes in dramatic ways.

Globular Cluster M3.

Some 500,000 stars are

crammed into an region about

100 light years across in

this globular cluster

Why do stars twinkle?
The songline goes "Twinkle twinkle little star". What is the cause of the "twinkling" of stars? Does light from planets "twinkle" as does light from stars?

Stars twinkle because of turbulence in the atmosphere of the Earth. As the atmosphere churns, the light from the star is refracted in different directions. This causes the star's image to change slightly in brightness and position, hence "twinkle." This is one of the reasons the Hubble telescope is so successful: in space, there is no atmosphere to make the stars twinkle, allowing a much better image to be obtained.
Planets do not twinkle the way stars do. In fact, this is a good way of figuring out if a particular object you see in the sky is a planet or a star. The reason is that stars are so far away that they are essentially points of light on the sky, while planets actually have finite size. From space, astronauts often get the impression that the Earth is small with a thin, fragile layer of atmosphere. For a space traveler, the distinguishing Earth features are the blue waters, brown and green land masses and white clouds set against a black background.
Many dream of traveling in space and viewing the wonders of the universe. In reality all of us are space travelers. Our spaceship is the planet Earth, traveling at the speed of 108,000 kilometers (67,000 miles) an hour.
Earth is the 3rd planet from the Sun at a distance of about 150 million kilometers (93.2 million miles). It takes 365.256 days for the Earth to travel around the Sun and 23.9345 hours for the Earth rotate a complete revolution. It has a diameter of 12,756 kilometers (7,973 miles), only a few hundred kilometers larger than that of Venus. Our atmosphere is composed of 78 percent nitrogen, 21 percent oxygen and 1 percent other constituents.
Earth is the only planet in the solar system known to harbor life. Our planet's rapid spin and molten nickel-iron core give rise to an extensive magnetic field, which, along with the atmosphere, shields us from nearly all of the harmful radiation coming from the Sun and other stars. Earth's atmosphere protects us from meteors, most of which burn up before they can strike the surface. [klik]

Galaxy

Galaxy is a massive, gravitationally bound system that consists of stars and stellar remnants, an interstellar medium of gas and dust, and an important but poorly understood component tentatively dubbed dark matter. The name is from the Greek root galaxias [γαλαξίας], meaning "milky," a reference to the Milky Way galaxy. Typical galaxies range from dwarfs with as few as ten million stars up to giants with one trillion stars, all orbiting the galaxy's center of mass. Galaxies can also contain many multiple star systems, star clusters, and various interstellar clouds. The Sun is one of the stars in the Milky Way galaxy; the Solar System includes the Earth and all the other objects that orbit the Sun.
Historically, galaxies have been categorized according to their apparent shape (usually referred to as their visual morphology). A common form is the elliptical galaxy, which has an ellipse-shaped light profile. Spiral galaxies are disk-shaped assemblages with curving, dusty arms. Galaxies with irregular or unusual shapes are known as peculiar galaxies, and typically result from disruption by the gravitational pull of neighboring galaxies. Such interactions between nearby galaxies, which may ultimately result in galaxies merging, may induce episodes of significantly increased star formation, producing what is called a starburst galaxy. Small galaxies that lack a coherent structure could also be referred to as irregular galaxies.
There are probably more than 100 billion (1011) galaxies in the observable universe. Most galaxies are 1,000 to 100,000 parsecs in diameter and are usually separated by distances on the order of millions of parsecs (or megaparsecs). Intergalactic space (the space between galaxies) is filled with a tenuous gas of an average density less than one atom per cubic meter. The majority of galaxies are organized into a hierarchy of associations called clusters, which, in turn, can form larger groups called superclusters. These larger structures are generally arranged into sheets and filaments, which surround immense voids in the universe.
Although it is not yet well understood, dark matter appears to account for around 90% of the mass of most galaxies. Observational data suggests that supermassive black holes may exist at the center of many, if not all, galaxies. The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles of Earth and will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in the night sky.

MR. Explain who will cause more injury to their opponent if both boxers punch with the same force. (3 marks)
Answer:
- Thai boxer
- Without wearing boxing gloves, the time for change momentum is shorter.
- The impulsive force is larger.

Gravitational Force
Explain why it is easier to walk on a rough surface than on an oily surface (4 marks)
Answer:
- A rough surface produce more friction.
- Therefore better grip and less slipping between the soles and the surface. Thus easier to walk.
- An oily surface reduces contact between the soles and the surface no opposing force will act
- Therefore difficult to walk.

Energy
A stone which released from a tall building falls down in the air. During the fall, the stone experiences an energy change. Explain the energy changes in the stone. (4 marks)
Answer:
- Total energy at any time is constant
- As the stone falls, gravitational potential energy convert to kinetic energy
- Gravitational potential is maximum at the highest point
- Kinetic energy converts to heat and sound when it hits the ground.

Elasticity
Explain how the forces between the molecules cause the elasticity
Answer:
- The forces between the molecules are attractive forces and repulsive forces
- When the solid is stretched, the molecules to be displaced away from each other
- Attractive intermolecular forces act to oppose the stretching
- When the solid is compressed, the molecules are being displaced closer to each other. Repulsive forces are acting to oppose the compression.

Chapter 3: Force and Pressure

Atmospheric pressure
Explain why places at high altitude the temperature is colder compare to places at low altitude which is more warmer.
Answer:
- high altitude low density of air
- less collision of molecules with surface
- low altitude high density of air
- more collision of molecules with surface
- if more collision of molecules with surface, heat energy are more produced. So that low collision is more warmer.

Pressure in Liquid
A small bubble of air is released from the bottom of a lake.
(i) Explain what happens to the size of bubble as it rises to the surface of the water.
[2 marks]
(ii) Explain how this change affects the upward motion of the bubble.
[2 marks] Answer:
(i) - The pressure of water increases with the depth of the water
- The bubble expands upon reaching the surface of the water//The volume of air bubble increases as the depth of water decreases
(ii) - Buoyant force increases as the volume of the bubble increases
- The air bubble moving with increasing acceleration

Siphon
Explain how a siphon works to transfer liquid from one container to another. (4 marks)
Answer:
- The siphon works based on pressure difference
- Air pressure in the inner tube is less than the atmospheric pressure outside the tube.
- The atmospheric pressure pushes the surface of liquid
- Causes the liquid to flow into the column of the tube. (to the other side of the tube into the other container)

Buoyant Force
1. Explain why a ship may sink when it sails from sea water to fresh water. ( 3 marks)
Answer:
1. In the sea, buoyant force > weight of the ship
2. When the ship in the river, density of water< density of sea, so buoyant force decrease
3. The weight of the ship > the buoyant force ,so the ship will sink

2. Explain why a balloon filled with helium gas rises up in the air. (4 marks)
Answer:
- The balloon acted by two forces: upthrust and the weight of the balloon
- The density of helium gas is less than the density of surrounding air.
- Upthrust equal to the weight of the air displaced by the balloon
- Upthrust is higher than the weight of the balloon.

5. Explain why the sinking levels of the boats are different in the river and in the sea.
[3 marks]
Answer:
- Sea water is denser
- Boat displaced less sea water and gain the same upthrust .
- Therefore boat sinks less in sea water

6. The submarine is able to submerge in the sea.
Explain how a submarine on the sea surface submerges and float still on the sea surface.
Answer:
- When the ballast tank is filled with water,
- The buoyant force is smaller than the weight of the submarine. It will
sink/submerges
- When the ballast tank is filled with air / when the water pumps out,
- the buoyant force is larger than the weight of the submarine, and it will float.

Hydrometer
A hydromater is used to measure the density of acid a car battery. Using a suitable physisc principle, explain how the hyromater works. (4marks)
Answer:
- related principle is the Archimedes’ Principle.
- Draw a diagram of hyrometer correctly ( small and long stem, with big bulb with lead or steell balls)
- When a hydromater floats in a liquid, the buoyant force is equal to the weight of the hydromater
- Bouyant force = rVg / depends on density of liquid
- The smalleer the density of the liquid, the more liquid it displaces and the deeper the hydromater will sink

Bernoulli Principle
The aircraft obtains its lift when flying due to a difference in pressure of the air between the upper and bottom sides of the wings. Explain how this difference in pressure is produced.
[3 marks]
Answer:
- The shape of cross section of the wing causes the speed of airflow
- Above the wings to be higher than the speed of airflow below
- When the speed of moving air is higher, the pressure is lower
- Hence air pressure below the wings is higher compare to above the wings

Pascal Principle
Using a concept of pressure in liquid, explain why the hydraulic system in this machine is known as a force multiplier. (4 marks)
Answer:
1. When the small piston is pulled up, the hydraulic oil is drawn from the reservoir into the small piston
2. When the small piston is pushed down , the hydraulic oil is exerted with force and experienced a pressure
3. The pressure is transmitted uniformly from the small piston to the bigpiston.
4. The forced produced raised the big piston / The system can convert a small input force into a bigger output force.

Chapter 4: Heat
Thermal equilibrium
1.
